How do you know a cat is pregnant? Can a pregnant cat be spayed?
faith19375 asked:
The stray cat I am looking after and intend to get spayed looks pregnant but I am not sure. Her stomach looks a little swollen but again I am not sure. I can clearly see her nipples. But she has 3-month old kittens and until about 6 weeks before she was lactating. She has been leaving her kittens regularly, so I thought if she is still trying to mate, she may not be pregnant yet.

If she is pregnant, how risky is it to get her spayed? I do not want to take the risk of putting her through the surgery if it may lead to serious/fatal complications.

cats can get pregnant again quickly after having a litter, take her to the vet, chances are he can still spay her and get rid of kittens if she is pregnant, it sounds cruel but I’m sure you don’t want any more kittens than you already have.

If your cat is pregnant, wait until after her kittens are a few weeks old and ready to be separated from their mother.
Isolate your cat from male cats.
Give away free kittens.
THEN get her spayed.
Or you could have a cat-abortion, but that’s not recommended as it can lead to medical complications. One cat owner I know had her cat die because of that.

you can not spay a pregnant cat and as long as she’s allowed to run free, she’ll probably always be pregnant. female cats ovulate right after sex and can get pregnant with 2 litters at the same time. you can feel the kittens in her if she’s pregnant. just be gentle.

I do not think you can spay a pregnant cat. It would kill the kittens. Phone your vet and he may be able to tell if your cat is pregnant. If she is not pregnant, get her spayed.
May God bless you.

About a week after cats stop producing milk they can get pregnant again. It is possible that she has gotten pregnant again. If she has just recently gotten pregnant then there is not a significant difference between her spay and the spay of a cat who is not pregnant. If she is further along then it can be a more traumatic surgery. Some vets will not do it if the cat is obviously pregnant. I would contact your vet and bring the cat in for an exam to see what they think.

A cat can be spayed if pregnant, the surgery may take a bit longer and may cost a little more. The kittens are aborted.
The only real way to find out if she is pregnant is by taking her to the vets and having him palpitate her abdomen. If he can’t tell that way, then an xray will be able to tell.
If she’s in heat again, then she can become pregnant again. Keep her inside and away from any unneutered males.

She could very well be pregnant. A shelter vet I work with told me that a female can go into heat 1 week after giving birth even if she is still lactating. They can even care for two litters at once.
You can spay a pregnant cat. It’s slightly more difficult, but shelters do it regularly during kitten season when there are already too many kittens to care for.

She can be spayed even when she is pregnant, but in this case she will be having an abortion too. If it is early during her pregnancy, it is rather acceptable usually, but if she has formed kittens it is like killing the baby kittens. You should have spayed her before she got pregnant. Anyway, take her to a good vet to check how far she is.

Your best bet is to take her to the vet to find out for sure if she is pregnant. They will not spay her while she is pregnant, you’ll have to wait until after the kittens are born. Spaying involves removing her reproductive organs. Take her to vet and s/he can give her a once over and either schedule the surgery or let you know if she will have move kitties on the way.

She could very well be pregnant again..if she is not too far along in the pregnancy the vet can and will spay her. How tame is the cat…can you catch her? If not, you can borrow or rent a “Have a heart trap” from a vet or the humane society so that you can get her to the vet for spaying. It would be the best thing if you can get her spayed ASAP so as not to bring more unwanted kittens into the world.
