How soon in a pregnancy do you start to gain weight?
Heather S asked:
I just found out via home pregnancy test that I am pregnant. I have an appt with my obgyn tomorrow so I’m not sure how many weeks, but I have noticed that in one week I have gone from 135 to 142. (I’m 5′2) My appetite has increased, but is it weight i’m gaining cuz of my appetite, or the baby?
Also thanks to those who advised me to take the test rather than waiting for another week!

probably from your eating
I gained a couple pounds too and I’m 8 weeks now, the baby is really tiny so the only thing making you gain weight right now is food

it is caused from your appetite for sure unless you are like 4 months along then i would say teh baby and teh food. You are gonna t least gain 30 pounds which is normal in your pregnancy so try to stay around that area or if you gain more it will go to you not the baby and you will be fat after wards, trust me im the same height and now im fat because i thought i could eat whatever during muy pregnancy, not

It sounds like you could be retaining water. I ALWAYS do that early on…then my weight gain tends to taper off and I loose the water weight….
Try to limit your sodium & salt intake (and read your labels…a lot of pre-packaged foods, canned veggies etc have a high sodium content) It will help you from bloating too much.
But you can really gain weight thru out your entire pregnancy. Your Dr will tell you if you’re gaining too fast etc. after a few appts. But at this stage don’t worry too much about it. It usually evens out in the end.
Good luck and Congrats.

Just be aware of what you eat. I’m currently pregnant and I make sure to eat healthy food and exercise a lot. I was pregnant before and gained a lot of weight. It’s really difficult to get rid of once you have the baby, so try to keep your weight at a minimum - without starving your baby of course. Just eat healthy food!

In the beginning I gained maybe only 5lbs and now I just started gaining some weight that is noticable and you can now tell I am pregnant and I am 6 months.

If you are like me and don’t have morning sickness, I started to gain weight as soon as I found out. Part of the reason was because I knew I was pregnant so I no longer felt like I should have the diet mentality. (I always try to keep myself as fit as possible.) Now I’m 23 weeks and I’ve gained 18 lbs. which is okay because I was a little underweight to begin with. If you see yourself gaining weight now, make sure you are working out. This will help for an easier labor because your muscles will have the endurance to push through the entire labor. Plus, it is good for the baby when you are in good physical shape. Make sure you eat right too. And since it’s probably your first pregnancy, find a list of foods you should avoid. Good luck.
